I’m an independent user experience designer.
That usually elicits a blank look and the question, “um, ok. So what do you do exactly?â€
The Quick Answer
I do everything a web site needs to be great, from the beginning of the project up to, but not including, the coding.
The More Detailed Answer
Since 1993 I’ve worked on making web sites that are simple to use, aesthetically pleasing, communicate clearly and achieve my client’s goals. My role in a typical project includes:
- Strategy consulting – helping my clients decide what to do online and how.
- Idea generation – leading workshops & brainstorming sessions to squeeze as many ideas out of everyone as possible.
- Information architecture – turning ideas into an organised structure, page sketches & detailed diagrams, or wireframes.
- Visual design – transforming sketches & wireframes into aesthetically pleasing, communicative & functional screens, ready to be turned into HTML & CSS.
- Design management – coordinating communication between client & team members, presenting results & keeping track of the design process.
Is There More?
There most certainly is. I also have a great deal of experience working remotely for clients all over the world, I enjoy speaking about design at conferences, and I do a bit of HTML & CSS coding on occasion.
I’m always interested in hearing about new opportunities, so if you’ve got a project I could help you with, please get in touch!
